Skills acquisition: boosting opportunities for job seekers

Since the global financial meltdown of 2008, governments around the world have been grappling with the challenges of sustaining economic growth through industrialisation and job creation initiatives for their citizens and economies.
The launch of the National Industrial Revolution Plan by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014, set the stage for the reform of the country’s industrial sector, with emphasis on areas of comparative and competitive advantages as well as the provision of jobs for the teeming population of unemployed youths.

However, employers of labour especially in the manufacturing sector, have often complained of the availability of jobs, but the dearth of employable skilled persons. This situation has led to the reliance on expatriates most times to fill the gap, until Nigerians are trained over a period of years to take over from them.

Indeed it is often bemoaned that potential job-seekers especially in the graduate cadre lack the requisite qualification to clinch the myriad of job opportunities industries have to offer. However, in order to correct the situation, President Goodluck Jonathan has utilised interventionist agencies like the Industrial Training Fund, (ITF) and the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), by constantly creating new, exciting and sustainable jobs and developing the nation’s human capital to admirable heights.

An agency like the ITF has made some notable strides and impact which industry stakeholders have recognised as milestones that could turn the odds in the favor of Nigerian youths, if sustained and expanded to cover every state in the country and all sectors of the economy.

Under the present administration, ITF has successfully trained and equipped youths with advanced employable skills in the numerous occupational areas, such as facility maintenance technology (FCT) mechanical & electrical services, information and communication technology (ICT) and culinary skills western and African dishes.

Other areas where the ITF has made highly appreciable impact, according to observers, are in mechatronics (Automation and Autotronics), Electronics, ie Computer and Networking) (ECN),with many of them insisting the training programmes has not only equipped trainees for a successful and rewarding career but also paved the way to long life education and training.

For the ITF however, those in the know said it was obvious the Fund was living up to its mandate. This notion, according to Author and Human Resource Management Expert, Mr Kunle Rotimi, is even more evident, when consideration is given to initiatives the ITF has spearheaded in recent times, particularly since a new leadership headed by Dr Mrs Juliet Chukkas - Onaeko, came on board as Director General and Chief Executive Officer in the latter part of 2014.

Rotimi noted that the ITF through its high quality world class training has to a large and reasonable extent, curtailed social unrest and tension within the country.
He said beneficiaries of the Fund’s training programmes, including ex militants from the nation’s Niger Delta region, has consistently proved themselves worthy wherever they are engaged, saying the unemployment situation in the country would have assumed a more critical dimension, were it not for the efforts and intervention of the ITF and support from President Jonathan.

“Kudos must also be given to the President for having the foresight to review the laws setting up the Fund. The review of the ITF’s law in 2011 has positively changed the face of manpower training and development in the country, as stakeholders and partners now feel more concerned and responsive to their manpower, training and development responsibilities.” Rotimi explained.

Assessing the manpower development initiatives of the ITF, Training Expert and Managing Director of Prot Consulting International, Mr. Sunny Agboju, said Nigerian and the West Africansub-regional economies are better for it.

ITF’s trainees and graduates, according to Agboju, have remained “hot cakes”. He said the level and quality of vocational training, coupled with the limitless opportunities it presents to Nigerian youths cannot be over emphasised.

Speaking on these positives strides, Human Resource Management Expert and Registrar, Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria, (CIPM), Mr Sunday Adeyemi, said the recent graduation of many youths in various fields of vocational studies from the Industrial Skills Training Center (ISTC) of the Industrial Training Fund, ITF has brought to the fore the role the scheme is playing to eliminate unemployment.

Describing these positives development by the Fund and speaking of it as a direct manifestation of President Goodluck Jonathan transformation, Director General, ITF, Dr. Mrs Juliet-Chukkas-Onaeko, said the ITF is determined to give the requisite skills to the teeming Nigerian youths, make them independent of government jobs, in order to turn them to entrepreneurs and employers of labour.

The ITF, Onaeko said, is also poised to establish additional 44 skill acquisition centers across the country under its National Industrial Skills Development Programme, (NISDP).

Graduates who had completed the required courses in electronics and computer networking and information and communication, welding and fabrication, auto mechanics, cooling technology amongst others have been produced by the ITF,the DG said.

She noted further that 38 of the centres would be for industrial skill training, while another six would be used for advanced skills training to provide direct employment and empower youths with employable skills.

How United States Group Plan To Ensure General Buhari Win 2015 Presidency!

David Axelrod’s Political Consulting Firm Far More Involved in Nigeria Election than Previously Disclosed

Group backing controversial former dictator exposed!

It is a well known fact that David Axelrod was the architect of Barack Obama’s election and re-election campaign.
What is less known is that the same Axelrod was hired by Nigeria’s opposition party, All Progressive Congress, APC to ensure victory for it’s Presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, a man with a horrible history of Human Rights abuses to his name.

In the last year, Nigeria sought aid from the White House for many initiatives, including the fight against Boko Haram.
The Obama  administration refused to do anything but play lip service to Nigeria’s requests. However, it used public and private channels to internationally magnify every failure Nigeria’s government experienced.
In the last year, since the involvement of Axelrod’s firm, relations between the two nations have significantly deteriorated, with the US refusing to sell arms to Nigeria, a significant reduction in the purchase of Nigeria’s oil, and the cancellation of a military training agreement between Nigeria and the USA.
In turn, the Buhari led Nigerian opposition, used the US Govt’s position as validation for their claim that the Nigerian government was a failure.
In a February 9th article in the Washington Free Beacon (http://goo.gl/guDlSH), the extent of Axelrod’s involvement in manipulating Nigeria’s affairs is revealed.

“A political consulting firm founded by Obama administration confidante David Axelrod has been far more involved in backing controversial Nigerian presidential candidate Gen. Muhammadu Buhari than previously disclosed…
Axelrod’s firm, the Chicago-based AKPD, has admitted to doing work on behalf of Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) party in the past, but claimed to have ceased its ties in March 2014 after the Islamist terror group Boko Haram kidnapped hundreds of Nigerian schoolgirls.

A political consulting firm founded by Obama administration confidante David Axelrod has been far more involved in backing controversial Nigerian presidential candidate Gen. Muhammadu Buhari than previously disclosed, according to a series of emails obtained by the Washington Free Beacon and interviews with sources on the ground.
However, emails sent between senior APC party members and advisers show that contrary to the firm’s claims, AKPD has quietly continued to perform political work on Buhari’s behalf as he fights to unseat current President Goodluck Jonathan.
With the controversial elections now delayed for another six weeks amid security concerns related to Boko Haram, sources on the ground in Nigeria are beginning to raise new questions about AKPD’s work on behalf of the APC and Buhari, who previously rose to power in the mid-1980s after leading a military coup.
AKPD’s ties to the APC first sparked controversy in March, when Boko Haram’s terror campaign attracted international outrage and shined a spotlight on Nigeria’s problems combatting terrorism.
Under pressure from the press and negative attention, the AKPD told reporters in March that it had ceased its work with the APC.
“AKPD worked with the APC from December 2013 to March 2014,” AKPD spokesman Isaac Baker told the Washington Times last year. “We helped them as they worked to form a new political opposition party and create a platform in advance of their first national convention. We were no longer working with the APC when the Boko Haram kidnapping of the young girls took place.”
However, AKPD’s Baker admitted on Monday that the firm worked again with the APC in December 2014.
“AKPD worked with APC from December 2013 to March 2014, at which point our contract ended. Nine months later, in December 2014, the APC re-hired AKPD for a 3-week engagement to help the party in organizing announcement events,” Baker told the Free Beacon in an email. “That was our only involvement with the party since we completed work in March.”
“That project is now complete and we have no ongoing relationship with them,” Baker said.
The internal emails sent between APC advisers over the past several months and obtained by the Free Beacon confirm that the work with AKPD continued after March 2014.
In a series of messages between senior APC officials and advisers from September 2014 to late January 2015, AKPD polling and other work are repeatedly discussed.
“The meeting went well and the report well received. [Gov. Rotimi Amaechi] will meet with the AKPD team tomorrow to discuss the facilitation of the event but no dates fixed yet,” APC member Olubunmi Adetunmbi wrote in one September 23 email to top Buhari adviser Kayode Fayemi.
AKPD’s work is again mentioned in a separate chain of emails sent between Buhari’s running mate, Yemi Osinbajo, and adviser Fayemi.
“I also think the AKPD surveys also clearly showed that the South West is the battle ground for this election,” Osinbajo writes in a discussion about boosting election turnouts for the APC.
A third email chain from Jan. 21 shows APC leader Nasir El-Rufai discussing an “October 2014 AKPD poll” that he hoped to disseminate to “the team.”
Requests for comment sent to several APC figures mentioned in internal emails were not returned by press time.
Sources on the ground in Nigeria and familiar with how the elections have been shaping up say Buhari has run an uncharacteristically disciplined campaign.
“They have run … a well disciplined message campaign, running on a clear and singular message of change,” said one source who agreed to discuss the matter only on background. “It sounds very familiar to another campaign some Americans might remember from seven years ago.”
While the APC has had trouble displaying unity in past election bids, the current campaign has showed few signs of dissent, the source explained.
“It strongly points to coaching they ordinarily would not have had in past elections,” according to the source. “That’s really the clearest sign that I’ve seen and other have seen that these guys are running a Western-style, Western-directed campaign that has identified a message through polling and research.”
While Buhari has positioned himself as an agent of change, critics point to his controversial and oppressive rule over Nigeria in the 1980s.
Buhari’s military government was known for harshly cracking down on civil rights, arresting opposition forces, and intimidating critical journalists. Human rights activists routinely criticized Buhari’s military rule. Buhari was deposed in a 1985 coup.
Other sources on the ground and familiar with the APC’s campaign say that the party has been trying to keep AKPD’s ongoing work quiet. It is rumored that AKPD employees are being housed in an APC compound located in Lagos, according to multiple sources.
“The sense is they’re being hidden currently in Lagos,” said another insider on the ground who would only speak on background. “They’re trying to keep a very low profile.”
AKPD’s close ties to the Obama administration also has given rise to criticism from those who see the White House as meddling in the elections.
“They have been particularly careful not to be seen at all because of the perception of the connection between Axelrod and the president and what that would convey,” said one of the sources quoted above.

I Never Accused President Jonathan of Sponsoring Boko Haram -Labaran Maku

Dissociates self from slander

Calls for Support for  the Re-Election of President Goodluck Jonathan

At a press conference convened, the Nasarawa State Governorship Candidate, Mr Labaran Maku refuted some peddling rumours among others, that he had accused the PDP-led Nigerian government for being the author of the dreaded Boko Haram sect. He described the peddling rumours as calculated media attempts to slur him into a friction and tarnish his image upon leaving the cabinet of federal minister and securing the gubernatorial ticket under the platform of APGA.

Labaran Maku, being the former federal Minister for Information who also held sway as Minister in charge of Home Security with the PDP government has pitched tenth with the ruling government and called for support for the re-election of the PDP presidential candidate, the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan emphasising that, the people of Nasarawa would not be deterred from voting out the regime of violence in the state.

Mr Maku stated in a text of speech released via the social media and obtained by NUJEurope that "the President and the Federal Government have absolutely nothing to do with the growth of terrorism in the North!

"I therefore wish to disassociate myself completely from these fictions against President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and call on the media to desist from publishing these mischievious lies without cross checking their facts.

"One of the purpose of this story is to create disaffection between the president and my good self especially following my emergence as the gubernatorial candidate of APGA at the April 11 elections in Nasarawa State.

"These blackmail will not stop the desire of the people of Nasarawa State to end the regime of violence in the state, nor will it stop the re election of President Goodluck Jonathan whose Governement has laid the basis for the transformation of the Nigerian Economy and Society in spite of the distractions he has suffered in the last four years.

"I call on all Nigerians to ignore these fictions and to massively turnout to vote for President Goodluck Jonathan at the election on March 28."

Below is the Full TEXT OF THE PRESS CONFERENCE OF APGA GOVERNORSHIP CANDIDATE IN NASARAWA STATE, MR. LABARAN MAKU!

"My attention has been drawn to lies and slander being peddled in the media, especially the social media claiming that I Labaran Maku said: President Goodluck Jonathan is the sponsor of Boko Haram, regretted working for President Jonathan's government and attributed the emergence of the Boko Haram insurgency to the PDP-led Federal Government.

Almost like a bolt from the blues, the enemies of President Jonathan went and created a satanic image with Photoshop, specifically "Imagechef.com" with the heading, "President Jonathan is the sponsor of Boko Haram, Labaran Maku said."

Although Photoshop is known for being used for mischief on a global scale, what they did was to use my good name to sell a poisonous story to the world about President Jonathan.

This is absolute slander and completely unacceptable in our democracy today!

My campaign team immediately rebuffed the concocted "photoshop" lie by releasing a media statement titled, "Maku Condemns Reports on Social Media Claiming He Said President Jonathan is the Sponsor behind Boko haram." Popular news sites and bloggers including Linda Ikeji circulated this statement and crushed the wicked lies being spread about in the media.

However, that did not detain President Jonathan's enemies and my distractors from their malevolent and deceitful ways because less than a week later, they began circulating another story in the media claiming that I told my supporters at one of my campaign tours of Akwanga Local Government in Nasarawa that I regretted working for President Jonathan's Government that is sponsoring disgruntled elements to kill its citizens and that Boko Haram insurgency is a product of the PDP -led Federal Government.

The desperation by opponets of president Jonathan to drag him down at all cost has led to attempts to blackmail and slander the president and his loyalists in the media, especially the social media.

In order to make their slander against the president believable, they have resorted to quoting loyal people to him as alledgedly attacking his person and his government. I have been one of the victims of this evil and ungodly propaganda against the president in the last few weeks.

It has now become obvious that there is a sustained campaign in the media to smear my good name and to create disaffection between President Jonathan and I!

The idea is simple: If Labaran Maku, a trusted loyalist and defender of President Jonathan for years can say this about the president, then it must be true. Because even after we passionately and quickly issued a rebuttal against the concocted "photoshop" lie, a few media platforms continued to publish this falsehood in a deliberate attempt to make innocent citizens believe them.

The president's opponents have resorted to the method employed by Adolf Hitler's propaganda chief, Joseph Gobus that if a lie could be told repeatedly, human beings would be compelled to believe it.

I therefore once again use the opportunity of this press conference to condemn all repeated slander against President Jonathan by his opponents using my good name in order to compel Nigerians to believe them. Although in politics, desperation is often not ruled out, it is clear that what is going on is truly appaling and evil.

Let me state clearly that I have never said that President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is the sponsor of Boko Haram. I never at any point, and surely didnt say at any campaign tour stop that I regret working for President Jonathan's government, and I also never said or even implied that the Insurgency in the Northern Region of Nigeria is a product of the PDP-led federal Government. This is and has always been my position on the above matters!

Those familiar with my position on violence in the country will recall that I have consistently linked the eruption of violence, especially terror violence in parts of the North to the negative and desperate mix of religion and politics in some Northern States controlled by the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC).

This mindless exploitation of religion for political power, and the failure by the affected states to address the basic needs of their people is what has led to the growth of violence in the Northern Region.

The President and the Federal Government have absolutely nothing to do with the growth of terrorism in the North!

I therefore wish to disassociate myself completely from these fictions against President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and call on the media to desist from publishing these mischievious lies without cross checking their facts.

One of the purpose of this story is to create disaffection between the president and my good self especially following my emergence as the gubernatorial candidate of APGA at the April 11 elections in Nasarawa State.

These blackmail will not stop the desire of the people of Nasarawa State to end the regime of violence in the state, nor will it stop the re election of President Goodluck Jonathan whose Governement has laid the basis for the transformation of the Nigerian Economy and Society in spite of the distractions he has suffered in the last four years.

I call on all Nigerians to ignore these fictions and to massively turnout to vote for President Goodluck Jonathan at the election on March 28.

Plan To Send Jega On Terminal Leave Scuttled

Efforts by the presidency to force the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, Prof Attahiru Jega, to proceed on terminal leave by March 1 and thus prevent him from conducting the forthcoming general elections may have hit the rocks.

A source in INEC told LEADERSHIP yesterday that the former university don and lecturers’ union boss would be in saddle to conduct the elections on the new dates of March 28 and April 11, this year.

Jega, who the presidency deems too independent-minded, was under intense pressure to throw in the towel prior to the Council of State meeting held at the presidential villa, Abuja, last week, in order to pave the way for a more pliable person to conduct the polls. Jega’s tenure ends in June.

Sources close to some of President Goodluck Jonathan’s inner circle have said that although Jega has shifted the date of the polls, the forces to get him out are still at work.

LEADERSHIP recalls that some of Jonathan allies, including his kinsman and political godfather, Chief Edwin Clark, had accused the electoral boss of conniving with the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) against the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the polls.

Clark, a First Republic politician, had called for his resignation a few weeks back.

Apart from Clark, the senior special assistant to the president on public affairs, Doyin Okupe, and the national publicity secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, had also accused Jega of acting the script of the APC, saying he lacks the moral right to conduct the polls.

But speaking to LEADERSHIP yesterday, INEC’s director of voter education and publicity, Barrister Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, declared that Jega would conduct the polls rescheduled for March 28 and April 11, 2015, and that he was focused on the task of ensuring free, fair and credible elections.

Osaze-Uzzi added that the INEC chairman had given reasons upon which he would resign from office, noting that the focus of the commission was to make the forthcoming elections better than that of 2011.

Following the postponement of the elections, there have been insinuations that Jega, whose tenure expires in June this year, might be forced to go on a three-month terminal leave in line with the civil service procedure.

But Osaze-Uzzi said, “The rumour has been there for a while. And at the last press briefing, Jega addressed the issue of how he would resign. He gave conditions upon which he will resign.”

On whether the professor will conduct the elections, he said, “He (Jega) will conduct the polls. It is just like when I hear rumours about resigning my job, I will just concentrate on my job. I am sure that is the same attitude he has to the job.”
