Gen Abdusalami Commends Goodluck says He is a Stateman

A former Head of State, Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar, has commended President Goodluck Jonathan for conceding defeat and congratulating Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari on his victory in the Saturday’s presidential election.
Abubakar spoke with State House correspondents shortly after leading members of the National Peace Committee for the 2015 general elections to a closed-door meeting with Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said Buhari had earlier told him that Jonathan called him at about 5.15pm to congratulate him.
While saying that they were in the Presidential Villa to thank Jonathan for his statesmanship, the former military leader urged all stakeholders to emulate Jonathan’s sportsmanship.
He said, “We are here to ensure peace is maintained at this moment. We thank Nigerians and all international community who came to support us during the elections.
“The elections have been very peaceful despite the hitches here and there. At the end of the elections, at the counting, there are a lot of upheavals that have happened but thankfully they have been contained.
“We were at the middle of a meeting with the international observers to try to see how we can still water the tension down when gladly I called Gen. Buhari that we are going to see him. He told me that Mr. President has called him at about 5.15 pm and congratulated him and conceded defeat.
“We were spellbound and the reason we have come here is to thank President Jonathan for this statesmanship.

This was contained in a  message of peace by the Acting President of the Europe Chapter of  Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Europe, conveyed on behalf of the Union to all Nigerians on Monday as they await  official  final  declaration of the winner of the election from the electoral body, INEC.
The NUJ Europe called for sportsmanship among Nigerians in the aftermath of election as the Union urged Nigerians to further be mindful of their actions and excuse any form of violence that may cause harm to others.
'Please be mindful of your actions and do reason well that you do not have to be hurt or hurt others in your acts when the results of the election come out officially from INEC. " Oladigbolu appealed.
Below is the full Message as communicated to the media.
"Message to fellow Nigerians.
"Pure Praises to God almighty.
"We have seen beyond March 28th and extended 29th days of March election. Be proud of yourselves as Nigerians for exercising your civic obligations to have voted for candidates of your choice for President and Federal legislators.
"Please be mindful of your actions and do reason well that you do not have to be hurt or hurt others in your acts when the results of the election come out officially from INEC.
"Besides, staying safe and keeping the peaceful co-existing atmosphere in Nigeria will bring more success, happiness, hope and  better reality to yourselves and the country.
"Do not encourage or engage in trouble and do not let yourselves be misled by others. To those who have been affected negatively by one reason or the other over the Presidential election, may God bless their souls.
"As the case maybe, the UN Secretary-General, US envoy to Nigeria, the EU monitoring groups, and other observers have been praising Nigerians for their zeal to protect their democracy.

"Ag. President, NUJ EUROPE
"For and on behalf of NUJ Europe Chapter."

“In the history of Nigeria, I think this is the first time where a contestant has called his rival to congratulate him and through this point, President Jonathan maintains a point that the blood of Nigerians is not worth his Presidency and by his action, he has proven that.
“He has proven that he is a man of his word,‎ because during our interaction on this peace committee, he has always maintained that he is going to accept the result of the elections whichever way it is done. And he has proven this.”
Abubakar urged all Nigerians to join hands and assist the President in peaceful handing over.
He said all politicians, those who are celebrating and those who are ruing their loss, to give peace a chance.
The former Head of State said, “In any contest, there is always going to be a winner and President Jonathan has accepted that he lost and we want to thank him on behalf of Nigerians.
“I want to thank President Jonathan for being the statesman that he is, he has proved that he is a statesman and he has the love of this country in his heart. So, Nigerians should please help him to ensure this is real.

The two main contenders in Nigeria’s presidential election

,“For any Nigerian, who is aggrieved, the electoral law has procedures for seeking redress, so if anybody has ‎any grievance, he should apply through the law.
“I appeal again to our youth, to everybody to please give peace a chance and accept that the chief contestant himself, has accepted' Gen AbdulSalam concluded.

Statement by Secretary Kerry on Nigerian Election Results (April 2, 2015)

April 2, 2015
The United States congratulates the people of Nigeria and the Nigerian Government on historic and largely peaceful elections the weekend of March 28.  We especially applaud all voters who showed patience and demonstrated their commitment to participate in the democratic process.
The United States commends Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its Chairman, Attahiru Jega, on the generally orderly vote, on the use of technology such as card readers to increase the credibility and transparency of the electoral process, and on prompt communication of the results.  While we note reports of logistical problems, such incidents did not undermine the overall outcome of the election.
In January, I traveled personally to Nigeria and met with both President Jonathan and now President-Elect Buhari.  At that time, I emphasized that for the United States, Nigeria is an increasingly important strategic partner and that Nigeria has a critical role to play in the security and prosperity of this continent and beyond.
I also said that it was imperative that these elections are an improvement over past elections and that they need to set a new standard for this democracy.  That means that Nigerians needed to not only reject violence but actually promote peace.
We laud both President Jonathan and General Buhari for their public commitments to the Abuja Accord signed in January and reaffirmed March 26, respecting the official results, and encouraging their supporters to do the same.  We commend President Jonathan for his years of service and for having acted in the best interest of his country.  We welcome President Jonathan’s calls for unity and calm during this transition period.
Finally, we extend our congratulations to President-elect Buhari.  The United States reiterates its commitment to working with the newly elected government that emerges from this democratic process.

Obama Praises Nigeria’s President For Conceding Defeat

United States President Barack Obama in a White House statement has praised Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday for conceding defeat in an election that he said showed “Nigeria’s commitment to democratic principles.

“President Jonathan has placed his country’s interests first by conceding the election and congratulating president-elect (Muhammadu) Buhari on his victory,” Obama said in a White House statement. Buhari won the election by 2.57 million votes official results showed Wednesday, defeating incumbent Jonathan in a close fought race.

“I look forward to working with President Jonathan throughout the remainder of his term, and I thank him for his many years of service and his statesmanlike conduct at this critical juncture,” Obama said. With dissatisfaction rife over insecurity and corruption and the economy faltering as oil revenues dive, voters turned out in force sensing an unprecedented opportunity for change in the weekend election.

“The last few days have shown the world the strength of Nigeria’s commitment to democratic principles,” Obama said. “By turning out in large numbers and sometimes waiting all day to cast their votes, Nigerians came together to decide the future of their country peacefully.” After an often bitter campaign that included highly charged rhetoric on both sides, Buhari said he planned to meet with Jonathan soon to plan the transition.

“I urge president-elect Buhari and President Jonathan to repeat their calls to their supporters to continue to respect the election outcomes, focus on unifying the country, and together lead Nigeria through a peaceful transition,” Obama said. Buhari, a 72-year-old former army general who led Nigeria as a military ruler in the 1980s, said the vote had proved the country’s belief in democracy.

Obama also praised Nigeria’s Independent National Election Commission (INEC) and its chairman, which he said “deserve special recognition for what independent international observers have deemed a largely peaceful and orderly vote.

Meanwhile, the United States government deployed hundreds of US Marines to be stationed in Ghana in anticipation of post-election violence in Nigeria.

Press Release: Nigerians Are The Real Winners of Presidential Election -APC UK

Amidst jubilation for the historic democratic exercise that brought in opposition leader, General Muhammad Buhari to be elected the President, the United Kingdom chapter of All Progressive Party [APC UK] has described the victory of its Party as the victory to all Nigerians at large.
This was contained in the press statement signed by the Press Secretary of the Chapter  Ms Adenike Lucas and officially received by Office of the President, Nigeria Union of Journalists Europe, (NUJE) in the early hours of Wednesday.
Below is the full statements as contained in the release.

[ PRESS RELEASE]
Nigerians Are The Real Winners Of The March 28, 2015, Presidential Elections | ‪#‎GMB15‬

Many Nigerians went to the polls on Saturday (March 28) and the greater majority voted for change in the person of General Muhammadu Buhari and his running mate Professor Yemi Osinbajo.
This is an historic election and Nigerians have emerged the winner. This win is a signal to the world that ‘irresponsible’ government will no longer be tolerated.
We hear the support for change from Lagos ((792,640) to Benue (373,961), Bauchi (931, 598), Yobe (446, 265), Edo (208,469). Even states that are known as safe grounds for the People's Democratic Party (PDP). Nigerians have made it known through their votes that they are no longer to be taken for granted.
Nigeria which sets precedents for other countries will no doubt translate this win as a move toward positive change. Change from the current status quo that has left many unfulfilled promises for the past 16 years.
The APC change being offered will provide a new Nigeria that will serve everyone for the better. A united nation where all citizens are made to feel safe, as security will be paramount to our government. The current threat to our nation from Boko Haram will be tackled immediately. We have a leader that will lead from the front.
Change from the current crisis of unemployment to job creation through the revamping of major industry such as Agriculture, mining etc. APC will roll out emergency job plans to tackle the current crisis. There will be 20,000 jobs created in each state to tackle this urgent problem.
There is no doubt the impact Nigerians in Diaspora had on this elections and so APC UK, led by Mr Ade Omole would ensure that Nigerians in the UK are not exempted from this positive change.
But whilst the elections were not as bloody as speculated, we must highlight areas of concerns raised by observers. Areas such as Rivers, Imo, Enugu where there have been issues of election malpractices.
It is fair to say that Professor Attahiru Jega’s unprecedented call for the use of card readers has saved Nigerians from what could have been a far wider case of rigging. He should be congratulated for heeding to demands of Nigerians.
APC UK will continue to work with our fellow compatriots to build a new Nigeria. A Nigeria that takes it rightful standing as the giant of Africa.

Adenike Lucas
Press Secretary
APC – UK Chapter.
