Breaking : Robert Mugabe  has voluntarily resigned as President of Zimbabwe

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe announced his resignation with immediate effect.

Wild celebrations broke out as Mr Mugabe's resignation letter was read out in the country's parliament, where impeachment proceedings against the ruler had begun.

Mr Mugabe said he had chosen to step down "to allow the smooth transfer of power" and made the decision voluntarily.
