Nigerians in the diaspora have been assured that they are not going to be
excluded from the winds of positive change to be heralded in the in-coming APC administration. Mallam Garba Shehu, Director of Media and Publicity of the All Progressives Congress
Presidential Campaign Organisation (APCPCO) and a top member of the
party, Mallam Babangida Ruma
disclosed this on Thursday in separate interviews with the Secretary
of All Progressive Congress [APC] United Kingdom Chapter, Ms Adenike
Lucas.
Mallam Garba Shehu spoke exclusively about the diaspora stands as the party begins transition with the
outgoing President, stating that APC acknowledges important roles played
by Nigerians in the diaspora towards realization of positive changes in the country.
During the interview, he said, “there is a plan for Nigerians in the diaspora. They are Nigerians like us and it cannot be denied that they have played their own part.”
Mallam Shehu noted that even though the facilities for voting were not available to those in the diaspora, they had been inspirational during the campaigns.
The APC UK led by Ade Omole spearheaded several petitions that helped to inform members in the diaspora and pressurized leaders in the international community to reiterate to the Nigerian government the importance of holding credible elections.
The IT consultant, as can be noted provided campaign incentives campaigns such as the ‘Make A Call, Make a Change” that enabled Nigerians abroad within APC reach in the UK, to make calls to Nigeria in order to encourage their families to vote APC candidates.
Mr Omole argued that Nigerians abroad often have better access to information and technology tools; hence they could be a good source of information for those at home.
This was commended by Mallam Shehu, who responded. that “sometimes the people at home will listen to their brother and sisters outside the country.”
“These things are all important and I believe that in due course the party will come up with a role for Nigerians in the diaspora but suffice to say, this government will be run for all Nigerians by Nigerians themselves.”
In the same vein, a leading figure of the All Progressive Congress [APC] in Nigeria, Mr Babangida Ruma has also acknowledged the role Nigerians in the UK played in the elections. Mr Ruma registered his appreciation for the collective efforts made by most Nigerians in diaspora across the globe in their desire to achieve better progress for the country. Expressing the level of comittment by Nigerians in the United Kingdom, he said “the party would work collectively with Nigerians in the UK to make their lives much easier”.
Following the landslide win of General Muhammad Buhari on April 1st, Mallam Ruma said despite the election postponement from Feb 14, “Nigerians in the diaspora had refused to be discouraged.”
General Buhari won the election on his fourth attempt received more than 2.5 million votes in the presidential election. The victory marks the first time in Nigeria’s history that an opposition party has democratically taken control of the country from the ruling party.
General Buhari known and loved for his zero tolerance to corruption took a lead in PDP south west states and the north.
Nigeria’s President-elect who won the two biggest states, Lagos in the south and Kano in the north has promised to “spare no effort” when dealing with Boko Haram, once he assumes office.
General Buhari who has declared his assets has promised that other members of his cabinet and appointees will do the same.
Mallam Shehu also said “this government has no option but to run a transparent government. The expectation is enormous and the resources available are dwindling but the government must be open to Nigerians. Nothing will be hidden from Nigerians”.
The former editor who described General Buhari’s win as a “great win for Nigeria,” said “Nigerians voted to stop the rot. From day one General Buhari would fight corruption; he will fight it with all of his energy."
“The business environment in the country will change. Where people don’t want to change they will be forced to change by using the due process of the law,” he said.
“We hope Nigerians will be able to sleep better at night because there will be due attention paid to security. The economy will also be re-orientated,” he added.
