Do not to retrench workers, Labour Party scribe urges Buhari

The Labour Party scribe has said that the President-Elect of Nigeria, General Muhammad Buhari of APC will be making nonsense of its victory at the polls if he make any attempt to retrench workers as a means of saving cost or as fallout of reforms in the civil service.

This is contained in statement issued on Sunday by the National Secretary of Labour Party Barr. Olukayode Ajulo.

Dr. Ajulo, a lawyer and activist also give an insight into why his party endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan during the Presidential election, stating that President Jonathan's government pro-workers legislations and policy are the determinants factors for the endorsement. He further stated that the Minimum Wage Act is due for review as it is provided in the legislation to be reviewed every five years.

“President Goodluck Jonathan has set a good example by being the only government that did not overtly or covertly retrench workers; instead a system was put in place that helped to detect more than 50,000 ghost workers and saved  the government a whooping N150 billion.

"The same government has shown commitment to increase of minimum wage, compensation of workers as regards work hazard and successfully addressing issues of pension

"These are not legacies that can be easily wished away by any successive government that wants to succeed. This is important not only in the interest of the workers alone, but also in the overall interest of the nation." stated the Labour Party scribe.

Ajulo also urged the outgoing president and the president-elect to build on the foundation of the new chapter that has been opened by the incumbent when he congratulated the winner in the March 28 2015 election, by working closely for smooth transition and implementation of ongoing projects of infrastructural development initiated by the incumbents government.

“That is one of the ways we Nigerians can say to the world that our democracy has outgrown primordial considerations and petty partisan considerations.” The legal luminary and rights activists concluded.
